2021.11.27 20:23 CryowolfGG Cryowolf | Warcraft III Review (Spoilers)

For the Horde November 27, 2021
[Version played for the purposes of this review: Warcraft III: Reforged for PC on Battle.net]
As far as fictional game worlds go, Warcraft had made its mark quite early, establishing the realm of Azeroth as one of the richest fantasy settings out there. Pairing this gift that keeps on giving with an interesting story and good game design were the key factors in making Warcraft III a milestone for the real-time strategy genre. Still played competitively to this day, we take a look at what makes people come back to it over and over again…
I am the Prince Warcraft III features a staggering nine campaigns, each telling the overarching plot from a different point of view. Even though together they offer more than enough content to immerse oneself in the world for dozens of hours, each campaign on its own is kept fresh and relatively brief by constantly throwing new challenges at you and progressing the story in a way that doesn’t contain any dead air, making a reward out of the short dialogues and rare cutscenes. Each of the four playable races has its own challenges to face in the world of Azeroth, consequently clashing with other races from time to time in the process of pursuing their own destiny. This storyline portrayal from multiple sides had me very intrigued, especially since many of the wrong decisions made by the various characters are quite comprehensible, even if you as the player are able to see the bigger picture.
We start out by following Arthas, crown prince of Lordaeron, who alongside the paladins of the Silver Hand is trying to find a way to save his people from a strange affliction. What unravels from there is a tragic epos leading many memorable characters to power, loss, redemption, betrayal, their doom and sometimes worse than even that. The reason this epic story spanning multiple continents works is that despite its grand scale, the main focus is kept on its noteworthy characters and their relationships with each other. For example, Illidan seeking forgiveness from his brother and basically sacrificing his soul to a dark power just to be rejected by Malfurion for what he had become really carried a tinge of real heartfelt pain for me. The story does at times fall into the trap of zooming out too much, though it does do a good job of not portraying the different races as simply “good” or “evil”, adding nuance and rationale to their actions.
So Much to Do As an only moderately experienced real-time strategy player, the campaign’s normal difficulty proved to be perfect for me. Warcraft III does an excellent job at challenging you with all sorts of scenarios, but having to repeat one due to failure is not fun at all. I recommend saving in regular intervals for harder and longer missions, which tend to crop up towards the end of campaigns.
The pacing is honestly quite brilliant. Every time you start to desire a little change in gameplay or scenery, it delivers. Blizzard was obviously quite aware that building up and managing an entire base and its army for each mission would have gotten both stale and a bit overwhelming rather quickly, so in most large-scale engagements the base had already been built up, at least partially. This simply saved time, which I was very thankful for. In other instances the gameplay got switched up, making us control only a small group of units instead of a whole army in order to lead them through a mountain pass, out of a dungeon, to find a hidden artifact or other comparable tasks. I always felt motivated to pursue the next chapter in a campaign, which speaks volumes about the excellent quest design.
The four playable races may not differ from each other quite as much as the Terran, Protoss and Zerg in Blizzard’s other big RTS franchise, but there certainly are enough differences to make Orcs, Night Elves, Humans and Undead feel distinct. Throwing the concept of hero characters into the mix makes us care even less about that, given that these have a huge impact on gameplay. Each hero fits in quite well with their respective race and none seem severely overpowered, at least in the campaign. Giving each hero up to four active abilities alongside almost every unit having at least one ability as well gives this game an unbelievably high skill cap, rewarding effective spellcasting and maneuvering. If you’re like me though and not highly gifted in the arts of micro-management, this can become overwhelming in a hurry. Some larger battles had me almost paralyzed, just watching the action take place instead of actively taking part as the game wanted me to, simply because I didn’t even know where my characters were located at that particular point in time.
Despite this sensation of inferiority due to lack of control, everything you do in build-up and battle feels like it adds value to your cause. You won’t feel punished for recruiting a certain army composition over another and all of the usable abilities have a measurable impact on the outcome of a confrontation. You won’t get around using your hero quite a bit as the missions are balanced around that, but it won’t have to be perfect every time.
Verdict Warcraft III’s deep lore and vast fantasy world easily carry its multiple intertwining storylines told from different angles, making the nine different campaigns come together effortlessly to form one grand epic, headlining some of the most interesting characters seen in video games to date. Each featured race has its own destiny and rationale behind pursuing it, making the story believable from start to finish.
The campaign mode always manages to motivate, switching up its gameplay at the precise moments it needs to in order to stay fresh. Dialogues and cutscenes offer interesting perspectives and are presented concisely so as not to disrupt the excellent pacing.
While gameplay can feel overwhelming due to the sheer amount of active abilities, it does offer tremendous depth at the same time, rewarding mastery in micro-management. The various playable hero units are well-balanced and offer a unique touch to every encounter. Even though you may never extract the maximum potential out of your army, everything you do feels useful towards the cause, making the overall experience rewarding.
Warcraft III works both as a cornerstone to explore the incredibly intriguing world of Azeroth and as a profound and competitive real-time strategy game that still has an active community almost 20 years after its initial release, and rightfully so.

2021.11.27 20:23 rprager18 Soccer on Campus

Hey everyone!
I’ve played soccer for almost my whole life and I am looking for ways to play on campus with others. I’m currently a junior and I haven’t once played soccer in my time here at UIUC primarily because I’ve been occupied with work and classes. I’m looking for an IM team or even just people who regularly play at CIRCE or even on the fields. I’m cool with 3 v 3 or even fully games, I just really want to start playing again. If you guys know of any group chats or something please let me know.
Thanks y’all and hopefully everyone had a good Thanksgiving break.

2021.11.27 20:23 yeetmetothemoonzaddy Is "neo" Marxism even a thing in any sense?

Now, I already know of how terms like "postmodern neomarxist" or just "neomarxist" are used by today's fascists in the contemporary iteration of the Cultural Marxism conspiracy theory.
But could a sensible definition of "neomarxism" exist?
Like, I know that there are classical liberalism and conservatism, and nowadays another variant of both of these exist, neoliberalism and neoconservatism, and that's because, uhhhmm how should I say this, generally because of a big cultural/world shift in understanding of political/social theory and whatnot.
Marxism itself isn't as old (I don't think) as liberal ideologies, and I don't believe there's been a big general change in "the Marxist way" of viewing the world, but is there/could there be an actual reason to use the label "Neomarxist" rather than just "Marxist"?
